“Mind if I sit for a minute?” he asked.

The old man looked up and nodded. “Go ahead.”

“That your wife?” the young man said, gesturing to the picture.

“Yes,” the man replied. “Her name was Rose.”

“She’s beautiful. How long have you been together?”

“We were married 55 years. She passed away five years ago.”

“I’m sorry,” the young man said. “You must miss her.”

“Every day,” he said, looking at the photo. “We met when we were 17. Dated a little while, then lost touch when I went to war and her family moved. I never forgot her.”

“You found each other again?”

He nodded. “Ten years later. I searched everywhere. People told me I was wasting my time. I told them I was crazy—in love.”

The young man smiled. “How did you finally meet again?”

“In a barber shop. I was telling the barber my story. He called his daughter from the back room. It was her.”

“Seriously?”

“She had been looking for me too. Neither of us had dated anyone else.”

“And you got married after all that time?”

“I proposed that same day,” the old man said. “We didn’t want to waste any more time.”

For 55 years, they lived a quiet, faithful love story. “We never had a single argument,” he said with a smile. “But we had lots of debates.”

Now, five years since her passing, he carries her memory in every step. “I take her picture everywhere. I still celebrate her birthday and our anniversary. I kiss her goodnight every night.”

He paused, then added softly, “I was a very rich man. Not with money, but with love.”

The stranger listened, moved not only by the story, but by the wisdom that came with it.

Before leaving, the old man offered one final advice: “Tell your wife that you love her every day. And be sure to ask her, ‘Have I told you that I love you lately?’”

The simple act of stopping to speak to a stranger is a gentle reminder to engage with the elderly. Especially strangers.

You may set out to brighten their day—but often, they will end up brightening yours.
