This Spanish Statue Illustrating a Mother Overwhelmed by the Weight of Household Chores

In the town of Torrelavega, Cantabria, a Spanish cultural group has erected a gigantic statue that many mothers can relate to, depicting the overwhelming weight a mother carries when it comes to household chores.

Street art titled, ‘A Mother’s Love,’ was part of a project called ‘Deconstruction’ in Spain.

The statue shows a woman carrying her child in front while also bearing the symbolic weight of the household on her back, signifying the inequalities that women face around the world.

Not only is she expected to take care of the household, but she must also raise a child, leaving her feeling invisible, exhausted, and on the verge of collapse.

The artwork challenges existing attitudes within families around the world and emphasizes the idea that it takes more than just the mother to care for a home and raise a child.

The statue has now been removed from the street. However, the Spanish cultural group Asociación Cultural Octubre stated that the statue has fulfilled its purpose:

“Our protagonist has left the street. She told us that she felt very accompanied and understood, and she hopes her message will be brought to light.”

The theme of the event at that time was ‘deconstruction,’ and it is widely believed that the statue did a powerful job of ‘deconstructing’ prejudices and stereotypes among those who visited it.
