Monyay, from Bradenton, Florida entered a group home at the age of 11 and was transitioning to life without an adult’s support. She was lonely and thought she may never find a mother.
But when Her caseworker, Leah Paskalides, 32-years-old, at a nonprofit organization Safe Children Coalition, saw how lonely Monyay was, she considered becoming her mother.
At first, she held back her desire to adopt Monyay because of conflict of interest in her role. But one day, as she was watching a documentary on TV, she learned how this man was adopted as an adult. It was an option that she didn’t think of until then.

She soon reached out to Monyay, asking if she would like Leah to be her mother. In less than six months, Leah legally adopted Monyay and they were officially mother and daughter.
Monyay has called Leah “Mom” since she was 16, only this time, she is legally her mother. Perhaps, Monyay manifested Leah to be her mother all along.
“She now refers to her adoption day as her birthday, so she has two birthdays each year,” Leah said. “We were always close, but now when she calls me, it means something even more to her. It’s legal, and that means the world to her, because for so long she didn’t really have a mom.”
