In 1991, a 25-year-old photographer, Zed Nelson, invited new parents Sue and Frank, who were both 36 at that time, to his studio to capture their photograph with their newborn son, Eddie. No one realized it at the time, but it ended up turning into a 30-year-long tradition. Zed called this project "Family," charting the evolution of parenting life, with mum, dad, and son in between.
They captured their last photograph when both Frank and Sue had turned 66, with their son turning 30. The photograph series that began in 1991 ended in 2021.
In an interview with The Guardian, Frank began reflecting on 30 years of their life. "It certainly stirs up feelings of mortality,” he said. “But I suppose we’ll just keep going with the photographs for as long as we can, till one or both of us falls by the wayside. It’s not going to go on forever.”
