76-Year-Old Man Walks Across the U.S. Inspiring Others with a Signboard Message “Love Life”

Steve Fugate started his first walk back in 2001 as therapy for himself after his son named Stevie, 26-year-old, ended his life. “I’ll never fully understand the reasons my son ended his life,” says Steve. Young Stevie was dealing with certain issues that led him to take such an extreme action. “He not only ended his life, but he ended mine too,” adds Steve.

But instead of wallowing in grief and asking, “Why did this happen to me?” he decided to walk miles, sharing the message that his son may have forgotten before taking such a major step.

It takes Steve six to eight months to walk across the U.S. He has accumulated over 43,000 miles in sixteen years. But Steve refuses to accept any kind of charity. Instead, he walks to raise awareness about depression and suicide, encouraging others to love their lives. “If I can love my life, anybody can,” says Steve.

While people may believe that he is alone on his journey, Steve emphasizes that he has his wife and children, his twin sister, and his parents supporting and encouraging him. Meanwhile, others often walk past him, honk, and tell him how much he has inspired them.

Steve turned his grief around while also reminding people to be kind and compassionate. His motto is to mend broken hearts while they’re still beating.
