Grandpa and Grandma Wear Abandoned Clothes by Customers, Reminding Others That Age is Just a Number

Hsu Hsiu-e, 84, and her husband Chang Wan-ji, 83, have been serving customers for 70 years at their laundrette in central Taiwan. Every day, they receive hundreds of clothing items that remain neglected by their customers. Overwhelmed by the pile, their grandson, Reef, suggested they have fun with them and try modeling, as he would post their pictures on Instagram.

Reef didn’t specifically intend for them to become famous. He just wanted to help them with boredom and break free from their routine lives without doing much. However, within months, their Instagram account grew to 130,000 followers.

“Their business is not always busy,” Reef told BBC. “Often, you would find them dozing off in the shop. So I thought to remind my grandparents that life can be great even at an old age.”

Reef would help them pick out 80s-style outfits, like matching skirts, accessories, and shirts, along with sunglasses. He would then take magazine-style pictures of them with the laundrette in the background.

The grandmother revealed that wearing those outfits made her feel 30 years younger.

At first, the couple hesitated to wear their customers’ clothes, even if they were abandoned. However, Reef’s perspective - that they could inspire others by reviving fashion trends and showing that age is just a number, convinced them to style themselves back into their 80s fashion again.

Their photos have reminded people to spend more time with their grandparents, while others are inspired by the core reminder that people don’t get old, it’s their hearts that do. “They say they don’t have any energy, and they rest and rest until their health declines,” says Hsiu-e.

Grandpa Chang has been working at the laundrette since the age of 14 to support his family. Clothes were expensive back in his time, he recalls paying 20 bags of rice and an ox-cart to buy a suit. However, with the growing affordability of clothes, the couple have noticed more and more garments being abandoned.

Well, at least their Instagram account will now remind their customers not to forget picking up their laundry from now on!
