In 1994, Alvin Straight’s brother, Henry Straight had just suffered a stroke. Alvin wanted to visit his brother, but because of his age (73-years-old) and having diseases like diabetes, he was unable to hold a driver’s license. So he decided to pick the only option he was left with - to ride a lawn mower, from Iowa to Wisconsin.
It wasn’t an easy decision, but Alvin being a WWII veteran and of the Korean War, his determination wasn’t going to keep him from seeing his brother.
Alvin loaded the mower with gasoline, food, and clothes. It took him about six weeks to finally arrive at his destination as the mower broke down a couple times, requiring Alvin to spend $250 on replacement parts, and request a farmer for help.

After the visit, Alvin’s nephew drive him back to home in Iowa. On the other hand, after Henry recovered from the stroke, he moved back to Iowa to be closer to Alvin.
His story inspired the direction of the 1999 film, The Straight Story.
Alvin suffered from a heart problem towards the end of his life. His funeral was held on 9th November 1996 (aged 76) with the procession accompanied by a lawnmower.
