To date, there are 50 prisoners who are now owners of their cats.
The cat program began 20 years ago when a group of inmates working on maintenance in the sewage tunnels beneath found a deceased female cat along with kittens who were yet to open their eyes. The inmates around that time were allowed to nurture these kittens within their prison cells. The administration noticed a boost in the morale of inmates, after which they initiated the cat program.

Prisoners learn to care and be cared by adopting a cat. “Society may never forgive us for the crimes that brought us to prison, but these animals do. Our cats allow love and compassion to flow through our broken souls. Their love restores,” a prisoner revealed to Prison journalism project.
