Liisa Hietanen lives and works in a small village in Finland, called ‘Hämeenkyrö.’ In 2012, she decided to make sculptures of her fellow villagers by the means of crocheting and knitting, despite having no experience in yarn-related arts.
She titled the series ‘Villager,’ depicting the importance of seeing others for who they are and taking time in getting to know someone, unlike thin-encounters that happen on social media.

Once Liisa completes a sculpture, she would bring it to the public sites for the locals to see, and provoke conversations. Her handcraft has been supported by Finnish Art Society, Finnish Cultural Foundations Pirkanmaa Regional Fund and Arts Promotion Centre Finland, and Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
