Man turns an old truck that he bought from Craigslists into a mobile shower to help homeless people and restore their dignity.
Jake Austin, based in St. Louis, Missouri, used to be homeless when he came in tune with the problems associated with shower and personal hygiene, as they lack a safe place to shower. So he decided to change that by starting a project, ‘Shower to the People.’ Except he would offer mobile shower on wheels.
Jake went on to buy an old truck off of Craigslist for $5000. He then set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the interior and fitting a shower in the back side of the truck. It’s internal mechanism involved taking water from fire hydrants and warming it up by an external generator. This way, the truck could run freely around cities, prioritizing the homeless.
The mobile shower is now able to take in 60 people for a warm shower.
“While it may not seem like a priority, but taking a shower is actually a big deal for homeless, especially when you’re trying to find and keep a job,” revealed Austin. “It also helps avoid illnesses and infections. But most of all, it helps restore dignity to those who may have lost it.”
