Oldest conjoined twins ‘successfully separated,’ see each other for the first time

Arthur and Bernardo, the conjoined twins, were born in a small town in Northern Brazil in 2018. Despite multiple attempts from parents to contact hospitals and separate the boys, they kept facing rejection by being told, “It was impossible.”

Well, it was only a matter of time, when the parents, Adriely and Antonio Lima, succeeded in finding a charity hospital ‘Gemini Untwined’ that agreed to fund and perform a separation surgery on the twins after three years since their birth.

Since they were the oldest conjoined twins to be separated, it brought added complications to their surgical procedures. But since their case was supported by 100 medical staff and involved 7 surgeries, their separation resembled a miracle, bringing success and a huge relief to the parents.

“Not only have we provided a new future for the boys and their family, we have also equipped the team with the confidence to perform such complex surgery successfully again in the future.”

As for Arthur and Bernardo, they were finally able to see each other’s face for the first time and have a whole new life ahead of them.
