South Korean Pastor who created Baby Box to help abandoned babies

A pastor in South Korea named Lee Jong-Rak once found an abandoned baby at his Church doorstep one winter’s night. Hoping to save lives, he created a baby box in 2009 and attached to the side of his house. The little baby box managed to rescue over 1,600 lives in the past 10 years.

Pastor Lee knew that one of the main reasons for parents to abandon their babies and leave them on the side of a road, had something to do with their financial situation. But he didn’t want these babies to be left out to die. He had the first thought when he found an abandoned baby at his Church doorstep one winter, several years ago.

Hoping to save lives of these babies, and children with disability, he created a cubicle shaped baby box and attached it to his house door, so that anyone could anonymously leave babies there, instead of leaving them on the streets or public bathrooms.

At first, he wasn’t sure how he’ll manage to save these babies, given, it wasn’t easy to seek government subsidy. But things worked out for him, and Baby Box now runs with the support of donors who want to save more babies.

But Baby Box operates more than just keeping the baby. Pastor Lee believes that babies are more happy when they grow up with their parents. Therefore, the initiative also encourages the parents to take their babies back, while offering them financial and emotional support.

When the staff hears a bell ring at the baby box, their first job is to meet the parents and empathize with their rationale as to why they choose to give up their babies, furthur offering them financial and emotional support. This has led to 30% of babies living with their parents.
